On April 2, 2024 the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg was honored to host Dr. Amy Freedman for a thought-provoking lecture titled "Understanding Indonesia." Dr. Freedman, a Professor and Department Chair in the Political Science Department at Pace University and Associate Research Scholar at Columbia University’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute, brought her expertise to illuminate a nation often overlooked in global discussions.
Despite being the world’s third-largest democracy, the largest Muslim-majority nation, and a key economic player in the ASEAN region, Indonesia remains largely invisible to most Americans. Dr. Freedman explored why this is the case, while highlighting Indonesia's rich history, complex political landscape, and its evolving role in Asia and U.S.-Indonesian relations.
Why This Conversation Matters
As the world faces shifting geopolitical dynamics, Indonesia's role as a stabilizing force in Asia cannot be underestimated. Dr. Freedman urged greater engagement with Indonesia—not only as an economic partner but as a cultural and democratic ally in the Indo-Pacific.
